The Korean name for this curious creature is gaebul, which translates as “dog dick.” Here in the States, it’s known as the fat innkeeper worm or the penis fish. Its scientific binomial is Urechis caupo, or “viper tail tradesman.” Whatever you call the animal, you can find them in abundance at Bodega Bay, where they build burrows in the tidal mud flats. On Saturday afternoon, our small, but enthusiastic clamming/crabbing crew thrust shovels and shoulder-deep arms into that mud in pursuit of Pacific gaper clams (Tresus nuttallii), but we also pulled up at least twenty of these red rockets. We returned them to their subterranean homes – excepting those that were snatched by eager herring gulls. I learned later that the gulls were the smarter hunters; fat innkeepers are edible, and are even considered a delicacy in Korea. 気になると思いましたので、解説もさせていただこうと思います。

打ち上げられたイチモツの正体
この打ち上げられたイチモツの正体は、ユムシという生物になります。
環形動物と言われており、現段階で世界にユムシ科は4種類あると分かっています。
今回打ち上げられていたのはUrechis caupoという種類ですが、このユムシさん、種類は違えど実は日本にも生息しているのです。
因みに日本に生息しているのはUrechis unicinctusという種でした。
北海道ではルッツ、和歌山ではイイ、九州ではイイマラ、海外ではスポーンワーム、もしくはストレートにペ二スフィッシュと呼ばれているので海外の方から見てもイチモツに見えるというのは共通認識と言っても過言ではないでしょう。
実は、ユムシさん、日本でも北海道の一部地域で食べられるいわゆるチン味だと言うから驚きです。
なんか勇気いりますね。
普段は砂の中で生息しているようですが、エルニーニョの年や台風に見舞われた際にしばしばユムシが打ち上げられるとのこと。
知らない人からすると何事かと驚いてしましますよね！
